Review: TUT

Our last fitness adventure was SUP and now we are trying another acronym TUT, getting into the lingo and all that 💁.  So we found out that TUT stands for Time Under Tension and to me this sounded hard, which might be while we chose it, after the relative jolly that SUP (& Prosecco 🥂) was. The concept revolves around how long the muscle is under strain during a set focusing on improving strength.  The class promised minimal cardio and a smart mix of moves alternating between upper and lower body, all designed to give you a strong lean physique. Sounds great right?!  Read on to find out how we coped…

Review: SUP

When I broke my toe it was quite a panic not being able to run, but it also put the majority of the fitness adventures off the table.  Kick boxing, for example, just wasn’t going to work. But then I came across the idea of Stand Up Paddle boarding, SUP to those in the know.  I figured I might be able to manage that, and the class I found included prosecco, which if anything would numb the pain.  Did we fall in Regent’s canal?  What are the heath benefits?  How was the prosecco?  All these important questions answered and more.

What’s in a mile?

The last time I ran a single mile, for a time, with any competitive edge, was in high school.  In American high-school (at least when I went which was quite a few years ago now, but still feels like just yesterday) we had to run a mile each year, as a measure of your basic fitness level.  I’ll never forget one year, coming off track and field season, and feeling fit.  I ran that year’s mile in 7 minutes and 30 seconds (or there abouts). I was 16 years old and bloody proud of it.  Fast forward 20+ years, and an opportunity to run another mile race cropped up.

Cut the sweet treats

I wouldn’t say I have a sweet tooth, as I’m an equal opportunity snacker, enjoy salt and vinegar crisps as much as I enjoy a chocolate bar.  But the sweet treats were getting a little out of control, so I decided to axe them.  No more pre-brekkie chocolate digestives, handfuls of jelly beans, afternoon chocolate bar, ice cream after dinner… it’s all stopping for a week, eek…. 5 tips to help you survive a totally inane injury

I hurt my toe (most likely fractured it), and it was really annoying.  I was just getting started to ramp up my training for a half marathon PB attempt, and kablam… I dropped a plate on my toe.  The pain was indescribable and yes, I had two natural births, I can do pain, but this still bloody hurt.  To be honest, now that it is about 85% better, I’m tired of talking about it (can you hear the collective sigh from my nearest and dearest).  But I have come up with a little list to keep you sane if you happen to go through a totally inane self-inflicted injury that prevents you from running or being active. Review: Barre

With our intro offer at Psycle, we had a few more classes to use up after our awesome experience at Ride 45 (which you can read about here).  I’ve always wanted to try Barre, and I was super excited that they had it at Psycle, so we had to do it.  I was afraid it was going to fail, as I thought it was for uber flexible ballet types, and that is 100% not me.  How wrong was I. Happy Place Festival

Welcome to Happy Place Festival

It’s always great to step outside of your comfort zone, and when Hannah Beecham, Founder of RED January, asked me to join her on stage at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival, I jumped at the chance.  After a quick phone conversation with Hannah, she explained more, about how they wanted to me to talk about RED January from a participants point of view and how being a part of it, has positively affected my mental health. I was nervous about being on stage and having lots of eyes on me, but there was no way I was going to miss this opportunity. Continue reading “Happy Place Festival”

Race Review: Wedding Day 7K Race

If you do a race twice, it must be a good one.  The Wedding Day 7KM is definitely a good one, and I’ve done it in 2018 and 2019 (both times dressed as a bride👰, keep reading for lots of photos), and I will 100% be there for the 40th anniversary of this race next year.  So, despite being a local institution of a race, what’s it all about. Why wedding day, why 7K? So many questions… Continue reading “Race Review: Wedding Day 7K Race”

Race Review: Hard as Snails

This was the first race I booked after the Brighton Marathon.  I waited almost 2 whole weeks (which seemed like forever) before I booked another race.  I didn’t want to rush into anything, and initially after the marathon ended I was desperately seeking a fall marathon to have another crack at the big 26.2.  But then I came across this little gem, Hard as Snails.  It sounded hard, ✔️.  It was an off-road trail run, ✔️.  I would do the 10K distance, and my 8 year old son Ellis, could do the 2K distance, ✔️✔️.  It was a mid-week evening run, well clear of any cricket games my husband might be playing, ✔️.  There was a snail shaped medal for all participants, yes please 🐌, ✔️.  And it left a reasonable amount of time to train as well, final ✔️, and out came my credit card and I booked!

I was pleased I’d not instantly booked another marathon, and was going to tackle something Continue reading “Race Review: Hard as Snails”
