A RED start to 2024

When RED January (Run Every Day January) started, way back when in 2016, it was an amazing experience for me, year after year I returned, roped in new friends. I even did a few photo shoots, which was super fun and got to join Red January founder, Hannah, on stage at the Happy Festival to talk about running and mental health.  But then all of a … Continue reading A RED start to 2024

High – Low Ultra Training

So this isn’t a blog post about my mood, high – low (and everything in between) although it could be, it’s a post about the high-low ultra training plan that I am working my way through on my quest to run my first 50km ultra marathon 🏃‍♀️. So what is a high-low training plan?  Basically, you have one high mileage week (on), followed directly by … Continue reading High – Low Ultra Training

What’s in a mile?

The last time I ran a single mile, for a time, with any competitive edge, was in high school.  In American high-school (at least when I went which was quite a few years ago now, but still feels like just yesterday) we had to run a mile each year, as a measure of your basic fitness level.  I’ll never forget one year, coming off track and field season, and feeling fit.  I ran that year’s mile in 7 minutes and 30 seconds (or there abouts). I was 16 years old and bloody proud of it.  Fast forward 20+ years, and an opportunity to run another mile race cropped up.

5 tips to help you survive a totally inane injury

I hurt my toe (most likely fractured it), and it was really annoying.  I was just getting started to ramp up my training for a half marathon PB attempt, and kablam… I dropped a plate on my toe.  The pain was indescribable and yes, I had two natural births, I can do pain, but this still bloody hurt.  To be honest, now that it is about 85% better, I’m tired of talking about it (can you hear the collective sigh from my nearest and dearest).  But I have come up with a little list to keep you sane if you happen to go through a totally inane self-inflicted injury that prevents you from running or being active. Happy Place Festival

Welcome to Happy Place Festival

It’s always great to step outside of your comfort zone, and when Hannah Beecham, Founder of RED January, asked me to join her on stage at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival, I jumped at the chance.  After a quick phone conversation with Hannah, she explained more, about how they wanted to me to talk about RED January from a participants point of view and how being a part of it, has positively affected my mental health. I was nervous about being on stage and having lots of eyes on me, but there was no way I was going to miss this opportunity. Continue reading “Happy Place Festival”

Race Review: Wedding Day 7K Race

If you do a race twice, it must be a good one.  The Wedding Day 7KM is definitely a good one, and I’ve done it in 2018 and 2019 (both times dressed as a bride👰, keep reading for lots of photos), and I will 100% be there for the 40th anniversary of this race next year.  So, despite being a local institution of a race, what’s it all about. Why wedding day, why 7K? So many questions… Continue reading “Race Review: Wedding Day 7K Race”

Race Review: Hard as Snails

This was the first race I booked after the Brighton Marathon.  I waited almost 2 whole weeks (which seemed like forever) before I booked another race.  I didn’t want to rush into anything, and initially after the marathon ended I was desperately seeking a fall marathon to have another crack at the big 26.2.  But then I came across this little gem, Hard as Snails.  It sounded hard, ✔️.  It was an off-road trail run, ✔️.  I would do the 10K distance, and my 8 year old son Ellis, could do the 2K distance, ✔️✔️.  It was a mid-week evening run, well clear of any cricket games my husband might be playing, ✔️.  There was a snail shaped medal for all participants, yes please 🐌, ✔️.  And it left a reasonable amount of time to train as well, final ✔️, and out came my credit card and I booked!

I was pleased I’d not instantly booked another marathon, and was going to tackle something Continue reading “Race Review: Hard as Snails”
